One small island, minds around the world

Kythera is a small Greek island south of the Peloponnese, the southern part of mainland Greece. For more than a century, families from the island have made their homes around the world, from Australia to the Americas, and many of them still feel connected to it.

This conference brings that idea to research: young people in many countries, each with their own question, present their work on this website to invited participants.

Three ways to take part

Students aged 11 to 18

Present your own research in English or Greek. Answer written questions from invited participants and join one live video room, run by an adult. Then you receive a certificate of participation. If no one asks a question, joining the room is enough.

Submit your research

Teachers, professors and researchers

Guide a student as their mentor, or offer to review entries or be the adult who runs a live video room. We choose the reviewers and room adults ourselves. Write to us with your school, university or institute and how you would like to help.

Offer to help

Families and guests

Watch the recorded talks during the 48 hours and ask the presenters questions about their research on this website. There are no private messages. Register and tick the box to ask for an invitation.

About the conference

Students present research they have done themselves, guided by a teacher, a professor or a researcher. Any field is welcome, from geology and biology to history, economics or computer science.

Presentations can be in English or in Greek. The live room of a Greek presentation is held in Greek.

Taking part is free. Presenters receive a certificate of participation (see "How it works" below). You do not need an account on this website to submit.

Because the presenters are aged 11 to 18, during the conference the presentations are shown only to invited participants: the students, their mentors and parents, and guests we invite. After the conference, a presentation is shown to everyone only if a parent or guardian agreed to that.

If you have a link to Kythera, a village or a family name, you can tell us about it when you submit. If you tell us, it is shown with your presentation, only to the people who can see your presentation.

The conference was founded by ResForMe, a research-mentoring organisation, and is organised by Dr. Antonios Marsellos.

How it works

  1. Do your researchWork on a question with your mentor: a teacher, professor or researcher.
  2. SubmitSend your title, an abstract (a short summary of your research, at most 300 words), your poster or slides (one PDF, PNG or JPG file, at most 10 MB), and a link to a recorded video of your talk (at most 6 minutes) before the deadline.
  3. Review and permissionWe read every entry and write to you if we accept it. Nothing about you appears on this website until we accept your entry and your parent or guardian gives permission through a link we send by email.
  4. 48 hours onlineInvited participants watch the recorded talks and send questions in writing on this website. Every question is checked, and your mentor and parent can read them. You answer at any time during the 48 hours, and you join one live video room, run by an adult, at a time that suits your part of the world. The adult lets in only invited people. Cameras are optional, a parent may join, and nobody may record the room.
  5. CertificatePresenters who join their live room and answer the questions about their presentation receive a certificate of participation. If no one asks a question, joining the room is enough.
  6. After the conferenceIf your parent or guardian agrees, your presentation stays on this website for anyone to see, so you can link to it later. You or your parent can ask us to remove it at any time.

Questions

Who can take part?

Students aged 11 to 18, from any country, whose research is guided by a teacher, professor or researcher.

Do I need a connection to Kythera?

No. "Kytherian is whoever thinks Kythera": anyone curious about Kythera is welcome.

Does it cost anything?

No. Taking part is free for students and their mentors.

Can I present in Greek?

Yes. You can present in English or in Greek. Write your title, abstract and poster in the same language as your presentation. Questions and answers can also be in English or Greek.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes, if you join your live room and answer the questions about your presentation. If no one asks you a question, joining the room is enough.

Who can see my presentation?

Only after we accept your entry and your parent or guardian gives permission. During the conference, only invited participants can see it: students, their mentors and parents, and guests we invite. After the conference, it stays visible to everyone only if your parent or guardian agreed to that. What is shown: the name you choose to show, your mentor's name, your country, your school and your link to Kythera if you give them, and the title, field, abstract, poster and video link. For a team project, the website says how many other students worked with you, but not their names. Email addresses, your age, and your parent's and mentor's contact details are never shown.

Do I need to be online at a fixed time?

Only for your live video room, which is at a time that suits your part of the world. You can answer the written questions at any time during the 48 hours. No Google account is needed to join the room: open the link and type your name.

Can people contact me?

Invited participants can ask you questions about your research on this website. Every question is checked first, by an automatic check and, when needed, by the organisers, and only polite questions about the research are shown. Your mentor, your parent and the conference reviewers can read all the questions and answers on your presentation. Each guest sees only their own conversation with you. Nobody receives your email address, and nobody can send you private messages.

Can my mentor answer for me?

Your mentor can add to your answers. Only your own answers count for the certificate.

Who can I ask if something is unclear?

Write to hello@resforme.com.
